Sudanese authorities say Darfur rebels have clashed with government forces in the northern outskirts of the capital, Khartoum.
Authorities and witnesses say Sudanese security forces are fighting rebels of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) Saturday in Omdurman, Khartoum's twin city.
Sudan's interior ministry says a curfew is now in effect in the capital until early Sunday.
The army increased security in the capital Friday, saying an attack from JEM rebels may be imminent. It accused JEM and its leader, Khalil Ibrahim, of planning attacks as part of a publicity stunt.
A JEM spokesman in London has denied that Khartoum is being targeted.
He told the Reuters news agency that the Sudanese government is fabricating the charges to divert attention from its recent bombings of civilian locations in North Darfur.
Five years of fighting in the Darfur region involving rebels, the Sudanese government and government-backed militias has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced about 2.5 million others.
